Castlebay currently has three construction projects in process as of October 2013:
Trenching for internet wiring
Wiring the school for the internet. Workers begin after the school bell has rung to signal the end of school for the day. They are trenching in front of the school to triple the bandwidth and run wires to all classrooms for reliable wireless service in each classroom. This is in preparation for the upcoming "Smarter Balance" computerized testing. This construction is expected to require five months beginning October 2013.
Construction of code compliant handicamp ramp at the front of the school. A ramp had been installed, but was constructed to old standards, was removed and replaced with a wooden ramp. Work will also be completed to make the office handicap accessible. This construction is expected to require 18 months.
Construction of a new MPR (multi-purpose room). LAUSD has received DSA (Department of State Architects) approval for the construction of the MPR. The current YMCA bungalow is 4' too close to the planned building, is not ADA compliant, nor is it up to fire retardant code. Moving this building has held the MPR project up for one year. The project is now approved to move forward and LAUSD is in the process of soliciting bids from contractors. The award should be made in 60 days, about the end of November 2013. Construction is expected to begin in December 2013 - January 2013 and require 12 months. A new bungalow will be installed for the YMCA, under the trees, south of its current location. It is not known whether the new building will be installed before the old one is removed.
