LA Conservation Corps Members in Limekiln Canyon

20th Century Fox and the LA Conservation Corps teamed up on January 28, 2011 to plant trees in Limekiln Canyon near Tampa between Sesnon and Wilbur. Carlos Campero, LA Conservation Corps Program Coordinator, explained that his crew worked with about 75 volunteers from 20th Century Fox to plant 50 trees as a follow up to the trees the Corps planted last spring.

In April 2010 the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks asked the LA Conservation Corps to plant 250 trees to renew Limekiln Canyon after the October 2008 Sesnon Fire.

Rec and Parks identified which trees to plant and where they should go. They included Blue Oaks, Coast Live Oaks, Cork Oaks, Ash, Strawberry Trees, Alders and Pines. The trees were paid for by Trees for a Green LA, a DWP Program. The Corps has been coming back weekly to water the trees during the first six months after planting.  Campero noted that they usually experience about 5% mortality rates on the trees due to root stock and the fact that the Corps is a training program.

The LA Conservation Corps is a non-profit celebrating its 25th anniversary. Their mission is to provide at-risk young adults and school-aged youth with opportunities for success by providing them with job skills training, education and work experience with an emphasis on conservation and service projects that benefit the community. They have their own charter school where students alternately study for eight weeks, then work for the Corps for eight weeks preparing to pass their GED.
